QUEBEC CITY (AFP) – Top-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova cruised into the second round of the 175,000-dollar Challenge Bell WTA tournament here, but a string of other seeds were less fortunate.

Petrova, the former world number three, advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Russian qualifier Maria Mokh on Tuesday.
Petrova, 26, is seeking to looking to continue her recent resurgence at this Tier Three tournament.
She reached the finals at Eastbourne and Stuttgart this year and won her eighth singles title at Cincinnati as she continues her bid to climb back into the world top 10 from her current ranking of 11.
Petrova will next face U.S. qualifier Varvara Lepchenko, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay.
Canadian fans were treated to the sight of fifth-seeded home hope Aleksandra Wozniak downing Romanian Edina Gallovits 6-4, 6-3, and seventh-seeded Olga Govortsova of Belarus survived a second-set scare to dispatch American Vania King 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Wozniak, a 21-year-old who is enjoying a breakthrough season that included her first career title at Stanford, was born just down the road in Montreal.
But two seeds followed second-seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer to the sidelines.
France's Severine Bremond ousted fourth-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-2, 7-6 (7/4).
Eighth-seeded Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden also bowed out, a 6-3, 6-2 loser to Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan.
